WOW! We’re off to an exciting and eventful 2016. Although February is the shortest month of the year, with the right attitude, we can make it the most productive. May the month of February bring you much love, joy, and happiness!
- Dining out this week for a special occasion? Have the restaurant servers split meals and bag half before it comes to your table. Meals served at most restaurants are notoriously large, and most people will eat what is on the plate even if it’s too much.
- Take the time to write down what you eat. This keeps you in check and reduces the chance that you may overeat. There are great apps to help you with journaling, including MyFitnessPal.
- Complaining of lower back pain? Your back and abs are antagonistic muscle groups, so to counteract lower back pain, increase core exercises. Try plank exercises, and don’t forget to work your obliques, as well!
February’s Character Trait:
Integrity — The quality of being honest and morally upright. “Integrity is the essence of everything successful.”
February is the month of:
- The American Heart Society
- Black History Month
- Valentine’s Day
- Canned Food Month
February Recipe: Asian Lime and Chili Salad with Ramen Noodles
Juice from 4 limes — about 1/3 cup
1/4 cup vegetable oil
2 tbsp. Sriracha (found in the Asian food aisle)
2 tbsp. soy sauce
2 tbsp. honey
1 tbsp. lime zest (finely grated lime peel)
1 head of chopped Romaine lettuce
1 package of ramen noodles, broken into bits
Optional: chicken breast or steak, grilled or fried
Juice limes and add vegetable oil, Sriracha, soy sauce, and honey to a bowl. Whisk ingredients together until combined. Pour dressing over the chopped Romaine lettuce. Sprinkle the ramen noodles over the salad and toss.
Add steak or chicken to salad to make it a meal.
Reminders & Updates
Don’t forget to renew your lease for the 2016–2017 leasing period in order to secure your same bedroom. If you aren’t planning on renewing your lease, stop by the leasing office to sign a written notice of intent to vacate.
Focus on Career Success
Whether you are a sophomore looking at internships or a senior getting ready for that first job after graduation, the spring semester brings added pressure as you seek to set yourself apart and set yourself up for success.
We want to be part of your success. Be sure to check out our career success events this month, including our live keynote event (February 25) with Mike Tomasello: “How to Land ANY Job, Even When Everyone Says You Can’t.”
Here are 5 tips to keep you moving forward on a career success track:
Tip #1: The key to getting hired is selling yourself better than the other candidates. What’s your pitch? Practice concise ways to share your value and what you are looking for.
Tip #2: Your resume’s only job is to get your foot in the door! Have it critiqued at the career center.
Tip #3: Google yourself: What does your online presence tell future employers? Are you focusing on your online brand? Your potential employer is! Work on shaping your presence online and off.
Tip #4: Come up with EVERY reason an employer might not hire you — and an answer for each objection. For example, “What I lack in relevant experience, I make up for with my drive and proven ability to learn new things quickly.”
Tip #5: Learn from the best! Find people doing what you want to do and doing it well — and ask them for guidance. It’ll be well worth your time and perhaps a few cups of coffee to do informational interviews with others on their success stories.
These tips are obviously just the tip of the iceberg. Watch out for career success experiences here at your community. Whether you want feedback on your pitch or need someone to critique your resume, let us know how we can help!
